CHANGE IN FORM

Plunket Shield Holders ■ V POOR SHOWING AT TIMARU By Telegraph—Press Association. Timaru, January 27. Canterbury, the Plunket Shield winners, commenced a cricket match with South Canterbury to-day. The visitors fielded the Shield side with the exception of I. M. Hamilton, who represented the home side. Canterbury gave a poor display, the batting being most unenterprising. ' With the prospect of a soft wicket to-morrow vastly improved form will need to be shown if'the team’s record is to be maintained. Winning the toss, the home team batted first, compiling 172. It was not anticipated the visitors would have any difficulty in passing South Canterbury’s score, but the Shield holders were disposed of for exactly 100. Dorreen was the only batsman to give anything like a good display, and he attacked the bowling with great vigour. Cromb batted for over half an hour for eleven runs, all singles. Canterbury’s tail, which included such batsmen as J. L. Kerr, A. W. Roberts, R. O. Talbot, and M. L. Page, was dismissed for 5 runs by A. McDougall, a seventeen-year-old High School boy. He took four wickets for 10 runs in seven overs, the last three wickets being secured in one over. The five Canterbury men selected for the New Zealand team scored 16 runs between them. At stumps South Canterbury had lost four wickets for 46 in its second innings. Scores are as follow: — SOUTH CANTERBURY—First Innings. I. Hamilton, b. Roberts 3 S. Mason, 1.b.w., b. Cromb -3 A.
