ROAD AND RAIL
Elimination of Waste
COMMITTEE SET UP
Motor Services’ Move A definite move toward the elimination of wasteful competition between road and rail services has been made by both the Aard and White Star motor companies. An announcement was made yesterday that a conference between the directors of the two services had been held last week to discuss the question of coordination between the two services and the Railways Department, and the question of legislation affecting motor transport. ■ , The principle of Government control of the transport position under the Transport Department was affirmed by those attending the Conference. A resolution was passed urging the Government to introduce legislation on the question of transport including the licensing of motor services on the lines of the -transport Law Amendment Bill of 1929. Full d ! scussion was given to the. question of co-ordination and the conference confirmed the policy of co-ordination between the two companies, it being decided to try to arrange their services in order to eliminate wasteful competition. / The proposals put forward were later placed before the Minister of Railways, Hon. W. A. Veitch, upon whom the deputation waited. In his reply to the deputation the Minister expressed his satisfaction with the offer of co-ordination with his department, and he added that in his opinion the only solution of the transport problem lay in complete coordination between interested passenger transport services. , Mr. Veitch complimented the two companies on taking what he regarded as the first sensible step. His department would give sympathetic consideration to the proposals and officials would be appointed to meet the committees that had peen set up by the two motor organisations. The members of the committee appointed by the motor organisations are: Messrs. J. E. Jenkins, Masterton; L. Havward, Christchurch; J. Musgrave, Gisborne; J. G. Gallagher, Wellington, A Cleave, Auckland; T. L. Robson, Christchurch; L. C. Ryan, Rotorua; and H. J. Knight, Wellington. The committee was set up to confer with the Railway Department with power to act in the promotion of any matters arising out of the conference.
