SUICIDE PREVENTED

Grafton Bridge Incident

PASSER HOLDS MAN By Telegraph—Press Association. Auckland, January 26. As he was about to climb over the parapet of Grafton Bridge on Saturday evening, Richard William Bryant, aged 67, was caught by a passer-by and held until a constable arrived to take him into custody. To the resultant charge- of attempting to commit suicide preferred against him in the Police Court, Bryant pleaded not guilty. Evidence was given by John Martin that as he was walking across the bridge nt 8 o’clock, he saw Bryant place his hands on the parapet and commence to climb up. Witness caught hold of accused, and with the assistance of a naval man took him to the end of the bridge and held him there until a constable arrived. He said he was down and out. "This man has 80 previous convictions, and is no stanger to this court,” said De-tective-Sergeant Kelly. “Like the poor, he is always with us. That.is, of course, if he doesn’t go over the bridge when he gets free.” The magistrate said a little hard work would not do Bryant any harm, and sent him to prison for one month.
