Free Fight Ends Meeting
FISTS, TANKARDS, CHAIRS
Berlin, January 25.
A free fight ended a mass meeting of several thousands in the East End, where it was arranged to open a discussion between Nazis and Communists. The latter’s spokesman opened the debate. At the conclusion of his speech a large bodyguard escorted him to his comrades.
Herr Goebels, the Nazi leader, attempting to reply, was immediately shouted down, which was a breach of the promise of the Prussian Communists’ deputy who arranged the meeting. Pandemonium broke out, assailants fighting with fists, beer mugs, and chair legs. Police, hidden behind the curtains and in adjoining rooms, dashed in and plied their truncheons. Over a hundred were injured, including many women. There were many arrests.
