The Tobacco Trade
Sir, —It amazes me that the tobacconists as a class have 'so long tolerated the gross exploitation of their legitimate business by other traders who use tobacco merely to attract customers into their shops. There is no other line of business which I can call to mind which would have so dumbly submitted to such practice. To cut prices below a workable profit is suicidal and _is certainly detrimental to the promotion of healthy trading. .... The Government have recently abolished the system of cigarette and other coupons as unfair to certain sections of traders and - can offer ,no excuse for granting protective measures to the tobacconist. The tobacconist is courting trouble unless he unites and demands justice and fair play. From an economic viewpoint I consider that a Government which will permit such trading is paving the way to further unemployment.— am. etc.. ' EX-TRADER. January 21.
