AIR MAIL USE
Letters from Dominion THOUSAND A MONTH Appreciation of the action of the’postal authorities in making available to the public of New Zealand the air-mail services in the other portion of the Empire and the United States is shown by the returns from the Post Office. Since the inauguration of the service, six months ago, more than a thousand let ters a month have been forwarded on an average from New Zealand for conveyance by air mail. (Since July 1 last, when the scheme came into operation, approximately 7000 letters have been posted in New Zealand for the air mail services from Karachi to London, in Australia, Canada and the United States. By far the greatest number of air-mail letters posted were for transmission by the Karachi-London service. The time saved in the transmission of correspondence posted in New Zealand between the fortnightly sailings of the San Francisco and Vancouver mail steamers varies from one to ten days. The savingrin time is dependent upon the. steamer connections made in Australia, and whether the winter or summer timetable is in force over the air mail route. The use of the Canadian and United States air services means a saving of one or twe days, while the benefits of the Australian services may r'salt upon a saving of anything up to a week, dependrag upon the destination io which the letter is addressed. The Australian air seewes run right amend the continent fr'mi Broome, dovu through Perth, aernsi to Adelaide, M< Jbourne, Canberra and S.voney, right up t<> Cairns and Normantoa in Queensland. Australian National Airways, the Sm.'th-Ulm coinpay, opera tea the Sydney Brisbane and Sydney-Mei r.nrne routes, wth Quantas going northward of Brisbane, while Australian Aerial Services, Ltd., runs from Sydney to Perth, with the Western Australian Airways looking after the mails'in their State. In ail, Australia has over eight thousand miles of air routes in operation.
