TENNIS CHAMPIONS FALL

Mrs. Thomson Beats Miss Nicholls

GREAT HEAT TAXES PLAYERS

H. Dymond Gives Angas a Fright

Dominion Special Service. Christchurch, December 27. Many tennis reputations hung in the balance anti three New Zealand champions were defeated on the second day of the New Zealand lawn tennis championships being played.at Wilding Park., Play was- in a sweltering heat of nearly 90 degrees in the shade. The hot sun and warm north-west wind embarrassed almost all the players, women and men, and the two New Zealand titles were lost because their holders were reduced almost to a faint. In the morning Miss Dulcie Nicholls, the "woman champion, was defeated in tlib second round by Mrs. N. Thomson (nee Tracy), of Wellington, and the doubles- champions, Misses M. Wake and M. Andrew (Canterbury), were defeated in straight sets by Misses B. Gould and B. MacDonald, a pair ranked only about third in the province. H. Dymond, an improving young Canterbury player, gave C. Angas, the men’s singles champion, a great fright in the second and third sets of their five-set encounter. Angas, after being completely outclassed, recovered himself in the last two sets by a belated change of tactics. Miss J. E. Ramsay (Auckland), easily defeated the Canterbury champion, Miss May Andrew.

Excellent progress was made in all •vents, and the tournament manager, Mr. Murray Kean, was able to start the mixed doubles in the late afternoon. Men’s Singles Survivors. ' The eight players remaining after the third round of the men’s singles are EE. A. Barnett, 0. Angas and T. W. Patterson (Canterbury), K. J. Hayr, A. C. Johns and A. C. Stedman (Auckland), ' and A. L. France and N. R. C. Wilson (Wellington),. ■ Of these, EEayr, France, Stedman and Patterson all had easy wins against opponents (very much their inferior. ,' Barnett, the young Canterbury man who caused the surprise of the .first day by defeating; D. G. France, beat E. EE. ■ Orbell (Canterbury) in straight sets, having difficulty only in the third set. 'Johns was fully extended to win the first /set from D. F. Glanville (Canterbury), but thereafter, sharpening up his play, he lost only four games after dropping the first set with patchy play. '-Wilson won his second round ; match against W. R. Robinson (Canterbury). , Both men are players of the “hit or miss” type and their match was one of varying fortunes. . • A Lesson for Angas. It should be a severe lesson to the • champion, Angas, that he waited until it was nearly too late before he changed his tactics against Dymond. Angas began the match patchily, but soon settled down to his usual fast, accurate driving game. Dymond can exchange drives with • the best and this was exactly what he wanted. He pressed Angas to 18 games in the first set, winning the odd game himself at B—6 and won the next two sets 6—3, 6—o. No one was more amazed than the champion, who found himself outclassed both at net and-on the baseline. Dymond was by then in the mood that knows no defeat, but the spell between the third and fourth sets unsettled him, and when the players returned from the pavilion Angas was definitely the superior. He changed his tactics, as he should have two sets before, and, mixing long and short, soft and hard, won the two decisive sets with the loss of only two games. Defeat of Miss Nicholls. The defeat of Miss, Nicholls by Mrs. Thomson was a triumph for shrewd tac- /■ tics over unrelieved baseline play. In the first set Mrs. Thomson established an early lead and was never pressed. She kept the champion on the run, relying on her better condition to give'her the victory. Miss Nicholls, recovering somewhat, gained a lead of s—l5 —1 in the second set, but Mrs. Thomson’s relentless tactics gave her three games in succession. The champion then appeared almost on the point of collapse; but the tournament referee, Mr. Murray Kean, held that Miss Nicholls when she sat down by the Sideline must either default or' finish the match. In the next three games she won only, four points, Mrs. Thomson taking the match 6—3, 7—5. All the other women had fairly easy wins, although that of Miss Ramsay over Miss Andrew was unexpected. Mrs. El. M. Dykes (nee Speirs) completely < outclassed Miss Marion Macfarlane and 'is by now definitely the favourite for the title. , Women’s Doubles. The holders of the women’s doubles title were decisively defeated, 6—l, 6—4, by Misses Gould and Macdonald. Miss Wake was hardly herself because of a touch of sunstroke, but even had she been at her best she and Miss Andrew could not have beaten their hard-hitting opponents. Miss Gould is the most forceful player in Canterbury, and when she is on her game, as she was on Satur- ■ xday, even the best have no reply for her forehand. After losing the first game • Miss Gould and Miss Macdonald took nine games in succession, winning the first set 6—l and leading 3—l in the second. The champions made a great ' effort to save themselves, but Miss Wake was on the point of exhaustion and they could not resist such a sustained attack. The second round of the women’s doubles narrowed the players down to the last four pairs, who are: Mrs. W. ( J. Melody and Miss M. Myers, Misses Gould and Macdonald, Mrs. R. P. Adams . and Miss D. Nicholls, and Misses Macfarlane. A Wellington Match. Mrs. Adams and Miss Nicholls had a good win over their fellow Wellington players, Mrs. Thomson and Miss Howe, hut Mrs. Melody and Miss Myers were hard pressed by Misses M. Sherris and E. Johnston, a hard-hitting pair from Canterbury. N. R. 0. Wilson and A. C- Stedman, C. Angas and I. A. Seay, and the France brothers, the three most prominent pairs in the men’s doubles, all had easy victories. The two veterans A. G. Wallace and M. L.-Lampe had a good win over B. B. Loughinan and H. Dymond after a strenuous four-set match. France and France lost a set to Johns and Hayr. , of Auckland, but were, on the whole, definitely the superior pair.
