TURNED AWAY
Rush on Limited Express HOLIDAY TRAFFIC Quite a number of people were turned away at Thorndon Station last evening when trying to secure seats on the Limited express. There was a dense throng of passengers on the train—described by several as “so packed they could hardly move” —and as a result the Daylight Limited this morning will be carrying a good number of passengers who were unable to get away last evening. Train traffic generally during the holidays so far has been considerable, and, judging by appearances, in the absence of definite returns, the railways seem to have secured a big share of the Christmas travelling. It is considered by some of the officials that the figures, when they can be announced definitely, will show passenger returns even better than last year. Inter-island traffic, however, seems to have dwindled a little from last year’s standard, though again there are no definite returns available as yet. The Tamahine on Saturday had a good number of passengers aboard. Both the Lyttelton ferry steamers, Maori and Wahine, have been carrying fairly full loads, but it seems that the number of passengers carried by the Wahine on her Picton excursion was down considerably on that of last year. The tram traffic on Christmas Eve showed a drop of from 140 to £5O on that of last year, buf it was better than had been anticipated. The traffic on Friday and Saturday was good, and the exceptionally fine weather yesterday induced many people to use the trams to visit the beaches around the city.
