HUTT VALLEY NEWS
—- * , / HELPING UNEMPLOYED Hutt Valley Residents CO-OPERATE WITH BOARD According to Mr. W. Nash, M.P., chairman of the Hutt Valley Central Unemployment Committee, distress among workers in Petone and Lower Hutt would have been much greater had it not been for the No. 2 unemployment scheme. Realising the situation’s difficulties, he says, the residents in Lower Hutt P a ** ticularly have co-operated to the full with the local committees. While t“pr e may be some difficulty in relieving the position up to January 31, the Hutt Valley Unemployment Committee hopes that the committees in Eastbourne, Upper Hutt, qnd Petone will continue to w'ork as they have been doing so as to give the maximum asisstance possible to the Unemployment Board in its efforts to relieve distress while the initial work in determining the board’s operations tor the future is being carried out, he addcd. . . Business men in the district are Rcnerallv appreciative of the board s difficulties in undertaking such a lar .S e work at short notice. One man, while appreciating these difficulties, said it■ was perhaps to be regretted that the No. 2 scheme money was largely being spent in work unlikely to be reproductive to any great extent, ?nd added that he was under the impression that members of the board, perhaps unavoidably, .had been hampered by too much personal attention to individual cases of relief. He appreciated what they had done as an emergency measure, however.
