Nash, M.P., chairman of the Hutt Valley Central Unemployment Committee, distress among workers in Petone and Lower Hutt would have been much greater had it not been for the No. 2 unemployment scheme. Realising the situation’s difficulties, he says, the residents in Lower Hutt P a ** ticularly have co-operated to the full with the local committees. One man, while appreciating these difficulties, said it■ was perhaps to be regretted that the No. 2 scheme money was largely being spent in work unlikely to be reproductive to any great extent, ?nd added that he was under the impression that members of the board, perhaps unavoidably, .had been hampered by too much personal attention to individual cases of relief. He appreciated what they had done as an emergency measure, however.
