IMPORTANT WORKS

Improvements in Petone One of tho most useful works lu Petone on which unemployed men have for months been working is the extension of Utly Street. This work, which is now completed, gives a thorough way from the Hutt Road to Cuba Street. The only other connection between theso two streets running east and west lu the borough is Jaeksou Street. It Is hoped, therefore, that the new Udy Street etxension will relievo somo of the-congestion in Jackson Street. On Thursday afternoon there will be nn official opening ot the street, when the Mayor (Mr. D. McKenzie) will perforin tho ceremony at tho junction to Cuba Street. . , „ . , One other improvement has been effected in Petonc that marks a great step forward. This is Wic increase in the borough’s water supply by the sinking of artesian wells in Tennyson Street, and the erection of a special pump to give the additional pressure through the bigger mains that have recently been laid. When the opening ceremony ot Udy Street extension is performed, the official party will go to the pumping station, when the new pump will be turned on. Tho pump, which was purchased out of the loan authorised in May, 1929, for the improvement of the borough water-supply, is electrically driven. It is built to pump water into the mains at the rate of IbOO gallons a'minute pt a pressure of -86!b. to the square inch* ' ■
