IN PAY ENVELOPE
Defence Staff Dismissals MANY RECEIVE NOTICE Retrenchment May be Severe Retrenchment among the staff of the Defence Department appears to have commenced in earnest, and it is known that the salary envelopes received by several staff officers on Saturday morning also contained notices terminating their services. About a fortnight ago there weN rumours that the staff was to be reduced by about half its present strength, but it is now understood, in fact, it if certain, that tbe retrenchment will b« much more severe. Those whose services will be dispensed with, if they hav« not already received notice, include many returned soldiers who served with distinction in the various theatres of service during the Great War. Most of those who received notice on Saturday are understood to be handing over the branches under their control immediately, and to be going out of the department as from- to-day with short leave allowance. Many of those retrenched are married men with families. When retrenchment was first discussed it was stated that as many members as possible of the civil personnel of the department would be drafted to other Government departments, but few vacancies are said to exist and it is understood that no such transfers will Im made.
