PETONE FIRE BRIGADE
Report on Year’s Work
Reporting to the Minister for Internal Affairs for the year ending March 31, 1930, the Inspector of Fire Brigades (Mr. T T. Hugo), stated that when he inspected' the Petone Fire Brigade, one officer and fifteen men were in attendance. . “The inspection drills were carried out in their usual efficient manner, and the station and equipment were found in firstelass order. Attendance at the twenty-six “fire-calls” averaged 62.5 per cent, of the total membership—considerably below the general average. . . , “Additions to the brigade equipment during the year include a new telescope fire-ladder, and six new call-boxes, m extension of the street-fire-alarm system. Improvement of the water supply for fireextinction purposes is now in hand, and anew 12-inch supply main has been laid down and a number of the old 3-inch mains are being replaced with 4-inch piping.” ... The advantage of these improvements was shown in the increased pressure of water to deal with the recent outbreak m Jackson Street, in the town’s worst fire flr For the year there was a total of 26 calls in Petone (twelve fires, one chimney, two rubbish, eleven false alarms). The insured value of the buildings and contents was £3480, and the uninsured £B2O. The cost of the Petone Brigade, capital expenditure included, was £1929 in 1929, £1945 in 1930; and the estimate for 1921, £1789.
