THE LETTERS TALK
One night when everyone was fast asleep in their beds, there was a funny restless stirring sound in Daddy s study. Then there was a tiny screech and pltter-pat of little feet hastening at An”the papers which had been left so tidily were scattered about and they had all grown tiny arms and legs, and had merry faces. There was a great deal of excited giggling, then the real fun began. One large letter climbed on to a chair and said :— “Now listen to me, folk of letterland. As yon know, we have all come here to choose a new king, for our previous monarch, being old and useless, was burned.” . , . He jumped down from the chair and was soon mixed up with the rest of the crowd of letters. As soon as the chair was vacant, up walked Johnny Bin. “Excuse me for being late, folks, said he. “but I couldn’t get here before. Fact is, I was hung up on a screw, by Cook, and it took me no end of time to wriggle myself off. Anyhow, now I’m among you, listen to me! There was loud cheering, and Johnny Bill went pn. . “I think I’m the best person to be your king,” said he, “I stand for so much. Why, you all know what I m worth. It’s printed Large enough at the foot of my coat.” The other letters laughed heartily at the joke, but they agreed that Mr. Bill was a good person to be king, all the same. . „ “And I’m going to have a Queen, said Johnny, proudly. And from a corner where she had been, all by herself, he drew forward Rosy Receipt. How the other letters cheered. And I know they all agreed that a Receipt is the best person to go With a Bill. —Sent by “Billie,” Papaitonga.
