EXCHANGE SURCHARGE

Overseas Passage Rates On account of the adverse exchange rates, it has been decided by uie Australian and New Zealand Steamship Passenger Conference to make a surcharge of 5 per cent, on passage rates from New Zealand by the Suez Cape of Good Hope, and direct passenger lines via Panama or Cape Horn. • From December 24 the surcharge will be added to all passag* money paid in New Zealand. The surcharge will not apply to passages booked before December 24, and intending passengers who have already paid deposits on tickets available at a future date are not subject to the impost. In making the announcement the conference stated that, it had been reluctantly compelled to make the surcharge, in view of the high cost of exchange in re mitting money to the head unices ot the various companies in London. A similar surcharge on overseas cargo freights paid in New Zealand was re cently made by the shipping companies concerned.
