ALMOST A RARE SURPRISE

Phar Lap’s Sister Beats All But Winner WOODVILLE MEETING CONCLUDED Arrow Lad and Hunting Cry Win Chief Races (By Telegraph.—From “The Watcher.”) Woodville, December 10. .’The Woodville Jockey Club’s meeting concluded to-day in fine cool weather and on a fast track. Favourites had a good innings, winning the first five races. Arrow Lad scored easily' in the principal handicap, while Hunting Cry made an interesting reappearance in New Zealand to win the open sprint comfortably. Nea Lap, sister of the famous Phar Lap, beat all but the winner, Pewa, in a field of fifteen in the Stewards’ Hack Handicap. She was a rank outsider and returned the best dividend of the meeting.

The attendance was fair, and the totalisator handled £11,135 for the day, a decrease of £3342 on the second day last year. The total for the meeting was £22,463, compared Tvitli £31,230 last December, a decrease of £8767. : r Favourite Just Does It. Easterly started a red hot favourite for the Hurdles, and was in a winning position all the way, being never further back than second or third. When she ran out at the last fence and lost several lengths on Evening Hero, it looked as it she.had lost the race. She came again, however, and scored by a neck. Kaokaoroa was three lengths away third, having been well up throughout. Shining Armour was fourth, followed by Lady Alophen, Whakaarl, and Black Acre. Lucky Run on Rails. Beverage, an even money favourite for the Maiden race, duly won,, but he was fortunate in obtaining a run up on the rails in the' straight, where four horses were in front of him. But for this it is probable that he’would not have been in the money. Beverage was lucky, and had Brambleton been handled better, he would have won and brought off a big surprise. He is a useful-looking four-year-old. bred at Stonyhurst, being by The Ace from Brambietye, and is thus half-brother to Thorndale an-. Prickles. Hollow Victory. Arrow Lad scored a very comfortable win in the principal handicap, taking the lead six furlongs from home, and never afterward giving anything a chance. Paratoo led him to the six, and then lay second, followed by Otairl, Atholspear, High Falutln’, and White Fang. Arrow Law was well clear entering the straight, and eventually won by three lengths from High Falutin’, who beat Paratoo by a length. Atholspear was a close fourth, -and then came Mountain Heath, Otairl and White Fang. , Nothing had any- chance with Arrow Lad who broke his exasperating sequence of seconds. High Faintin’ was all out to beat Paratoo, who claimed a 51b. allowance, but did not improve very much on his first day’s form. Atholspear was not good enough, and the efforts of Otairl and White Fang when they moved up on the turn were shortlived. Thrilling Finish. The two-year-old race provided a thrilling finish, Esteem getting lip on the post to. beat the pacemakers Chief Cook and Hampden with just sufficient margin to declare by. , , St. Roger got left, and took no part in the Lad Was well clear entering the straight, the. straight from All Humbug, Esteem. Psychologist, and Teller. Chief Cook and Hampden were having a rare battle, and until the closing stages Hampden looked likely”. Chief Cook finished better, how'ever only to go under in the very last stride to the hard-ridden 'favourite, Esteem, the margins being half a head and a head. All Humbug was fourth, followed by, Psychologist, Teller and Buster Brown. The winner's performance was very solid, for Gray was hard at him a long way from home. Chief Cook and Hampden ran well, while All Humbug and Psychologist, the latter from the same stable as the winner, performed creditably. Hunting Cry Easily. Hunting Cry, having his first race since his success over a mile and a quarter -at Randwick, started a hot favourite for tlm sprint. ... , After beginning best, and lying second to Taranto to the straight, be came on to, score a very comfortable victory. There was a good race for second money a length and a half behind the winner. Royal Parade beating Keddar by half a neck. Dobbin was fourth, after being prominent throughout, and Broad Acre and Taranto were next. Reed was never called on to move on tne winner, just, keeping him going. Convincing Performance.! The consistent Acmil scored a convincing win in the hack sprint, after getting none the best of a poor dispatch, and then running wide into the straight. There was one false start, and when let go Mahora got all the best of it, being well clear in the first two furlongs from Money Mint, San Quex, Crash and Pakitere, then . Pass On and Statuary. San Quex got squeezed back at the half, and on the turn the order was Mahora, Crash and Pakiterc, from San Quex, with Statuary and Acmil moving up. Once in line Statuary drew up, and was clear over the last furlong. Acmil then came with a rattle, and got up to win by half a neck. Pass On was a length and a half away third, with Mahora fourth, then King Hal, Snn Quex, and Pakltere. The winner won too well for any excuses for the others, but the favourite, Pakltere, was outside several horses all the way. Nea Lap Shows Form. The feature of the hack distance event was the forward showing of Phar Lap s sister, Nea Lap. So far she has shown very moderate form, but to-day she swept, up on the outer on the I urn and beat all but the winner, Pewa. Pewa was always well placed in behind the leaders, Arrowzone and Tripping, and once he made his run, the race was over, his margin at the post being a length and a half. The favourite, Tripping, failed by a head to withstand Nea Lap’s run, and Jayson was right up fourth. Jayson was unlucky, for he had to come from the rear of the field. Spearopa and Arrowhead finished next after good races. Dainty Ways was fair Lordllke did not got a good run. He had no luck at the meeting. Nea Lap carried only £l4, so her dividend for second was substantial, and the largest of the meeting. ' An inquiry into Lordlike’s running was held, but no action was taken. Wins a Double. Kahikatoa won his double in convincing style, again being handy to the leaders, Queen’s. Choice and Tahoma to the straight, and then running home too strongly for his opponents, beating Tahoma by a length and a half. Tahoma lasted long enough to beat Desert Song by a head. Bold finished well into fourth place, and then came Rory Mor and Queen’s Choice. It was again a good thing for the winner. Tahoma should soon win a race, and Deser Song ran well. Head Serang was unlucky. Details of the Racing PAPAWAt HACK HURDLES, of »ovs.; second 20 sovs.. and third -o &o\s. One mile and a half.’ 1 T. F. Relling’s b. m. TRENTHAM 2-YEAR-OLDS Trentham stables on present appearances look as if they will have one or two useful two-year-olds before the season ends. Saturday's work suggested that the policy adopted of not hurrying them early in the season is going to prove beneficial. The gallops of Acorn and Saltspray, and of Oratorian and St. Koger, showed them to be a promising quartet. Most interest will naturally centre in Oratorian, for he is a half-brother by Hunting Song to those good periormers Oratrix and Concentrate, and he cost Mr. R. J. Murphy the record price of 2400gns. Too often these high-priced yearlings do very little to recoup the original outlay, but so far as Oratorian has gone, and that of course is not far yet, he has given every promise of j turning out good. On Saturday he had his first real test, and, although his two companions were doing it better at the finish, that could only be expected, for Oratorian has not been hurried. What pleased his trainer was the way he pulled up, and the fact that the gallop had not unsettled him' in the least. He behaved afterward like an old horse. ' Oratorian is a good-looking chestnut, generally regarded as the best colour for good descendants of Hurry On, and when he has finished growing he will be a very commanding horse. Oratorian’s stablemate, St. Roger, shows speed, which seems natural, seeing that . he is from a granddaughter of The Welkin, but his sire also is a Hurry On horse, Roger de Rusli. He also is a nice-looking chestnut colt. Mr. H. Murphy appears to have secured a bargain at. the llOgns. he ■gave for. him at the Sydney sales last Easter. Acorn is a brown filly by Paladin from the Martian mare Hornbeam,-dam of Sir Roy and Don Quixote. Acorn appears !•> have thrown back to the Martian strain, and although she has not done a great deal yet, she shaped very'smartly on Saturday morning. Saltspray has nut been hurried, but he also shapes promisingly. He is a brother to Mr. Greenwood's Ozone, being by Saltash from Aries by The Welkin from the Hotchkiss mare ■ Armlgera. This is a very good family to- which belong the' Melbourne Cup winner King Ingoda. the Auckland Cup winner Corinax, and the; speedy Riccarton filly of some years back— Armlet.
