A start has bean made to remove the core from the Hataitai end of ' Mount Victoria tunnel, and already about 15ft. has been demolished. There is in the Newtown Museum a propeller blade from a Graham-White aeroplane which, it is reported, was brought down during the war in defending London against air raids. It was presented by Mr. R. H. Wilson. The Hutt-Waikanae highway, which has been closed for over a week, ■will be opened this morning. Until further notice only light traffic will be able to use the road, and motor-lorries are barred. An old motor-lorry awaiting disposal on a section in Cable Street, Wellington, attracted thieves on several riights recently. The generator, magneto, carburettor and headlamps were first removed. During the week-end the thieves returned for the wheels and left the vehicle standing on its axles. The lorry was awaiting removal by a motor wrecking firm. The Ngaio Progressive Association challenges the statement of a member of the Brooklyn Electors’ Association who remarked at the annual meeting of electors: “We’re paying rates for a Ngaio hall, but we have not got a footpath.” The president of the Ngaio Progressive Association, Mr. H. L. Cummings, said yesterday: “The position is that the interest and sinking fund for the hall is borne by the ratepayers of Ngaio district only, and for this purpose a special rating area was created in 1925.”
