Bee, declared that schoolmasters lamentably failed in their efforts to train children passing through their hands. “We boast that New South. Wales has an education system equal to any in the world, yet, to a large extent, the scholars turned out appear incapable of thinking for themselves,” he said. “I do not often touch on matters outside of school life, but one cannot look upon the events of recent years without realising to some extent that democracy appears to have failed. The workers have extensive machinery for settling disputes, yet, when some grievance, real or imaginary, arises they obey an outside adviser and strike. “They seem unable to grasp the fact that the immense loss in wages cannot be made up. They also seem to be carried away by the promises of politicians who know they are incapable of fulfilment. These things make me feel that we schoolmasters have failed.” MEAT STRIKE ENDS Heavy Loss to Trade WAGE-EARNERS SUFFER Sydney, December 9. All the meat strikers will be at work to-day. Although the stoppage only lasted a month it resulted in a loss of £33.000 in wages to the men and the loss to the trade amounted to £120,000. Members of the Master Butchers’ Association decided to send a deputation to the Premier, Mr. J. T. Lang, to ask him to facilitate the payment of about £9OOO, represented by coupons for meat issued under the unemployment relief scheme. POPULAR MAYOR Election in Sydney ALDERMAN J. JACKSON (Rec. December 9, 9 p.m.) Sydney, December 9. Aiderman J. Jackson has been elected Lord Mayor of Sydney. He is a successful business man in the city and is popular with all political parties. He has been an aiderman for seven years. His colleagues describe him as a man of action. His election was regarded as a foregone conclusion. FUTURE ACTION Legislative Council GOVERNMENT WAITING Sydney, December 9. The Statp Government has decided to await developments in the move to abolish the Legislative Council and not to prepare definite plans for future action. Cabinet expects that both Bills by which the abolition of the Council will be effected will pass through all their stages by Thursday.
