CONTROL BY LIGHTS

Traffic on Kelburn Viaduct The City Council recently ordered an electrical signalling system which is to operate at the Taranaki Street-Manners Street intersection.- Part of the apparatus was ordered in England and part in the United States. The latter portion has arrived, and in order to secure better control of the traffic over the old Kelburn viaduct has Deen temporarily installed at the ends of the bridge. At present the time between the changes is about 35 seconds, an amber light showing between the changes trom green to red and vice versa. . Motorists must wait until the amber light disappears before acting on a signal, or they may meet a motorist from the opposite direction about the middle of the bridge. It is owing to the weak state of the bridge that thia control of traffic has been ordered, thus obviating the necessity of outward-bound vehicles going over the hill via Ratoa Road to get to Karori. The new viaduct will be ready for opening about February, by which time the whole of . the signalling apparatus will have arrived, and the system will then be transferred to Taranaki Street.
