FIRES IN CITY

Damage to Residence Hire broke out in a house, No. 19 Whittaker Street, soon after 9 p.m. on Saturday. No one was at home at the time, and the flames had a good hold by the time the Central Hire Brigade arrived on the scene. The brigade quickly had the fire under control, thereby eliminating danger to No. 17 next door, from which No. 19 is semi-detached, and separated only by a brick and concrete wall.'

Those who live in No. 17 Whittaker Street were seated in a room at the back of the house while the fire was beginning. Persistent and growing noises and thuds led eventually to an investigation, and by this time flames were coming from the windows. The fire had Ix-en seen, however, by some small girls near Ghuznee Street and they gave the alarm. The residence which was on fire was a wooden house of four rooms occupied by a Mrs. Reynolds, whose husband is in hospital at the present time. Two bedrooms and the kitehen. with their contents, were fairly severely damaged by fire, smoke and water.
