MILK LORRIES
License on Loads RELAXATION ASKED Dominion Special Service. Masterton, December 5. A matter of some importance to dairy farmers was brought up by Mr. E. A. Hyder at a meeting of the Wairarapa Automobile. Association. It was stated that the district traffic inspector had been visiting dairy factories in the district and weighing farmers’ trucks and loads of milk on arrival at the factory, where it was found that the gr....j weight was even slightly over the two tons allowed by the traffic regulations before a' heavy traffic license is necessary. The inspector insisted that a license must be taken out, and it was pointed out by Mr. Hyder that most of the light lorries in use by farmers weighed, unladen, about 30cwt., which only. left lOcwt. for a load. It was in most cases only in the flush of the milking season that the weight would be exceeded, and if a farmer took out a license for this period the quarter dates are such that he would have to pay for a six month’s license, when he only would be in excess for approximately two months. Furthermore, the dairy farmer only used the road for this particular traffic for a very short period each day. Mr. Hyder considered the regulation imposed a great hardship on dairy farmers. and suggi* ted that the association should endeavour to have th-' weight limit raised to three tons; After discussion the association decided to make representations to the Transport Board and county councils to see if the regulations in this particular respect can be amended or relaxed.
