The weather was sultry, and the wicket fast for the opening of the cricket match between West Indies and South Australia. , , The Indies won the toss, and opened with Roach and Birkett. Both batsmen were cautious, taking eighteen minutes to make a dozen. Roach concentrated on the leg side, and skied Grimmett into the deep field for six. Lonegran, in attempt ing to make a catch, collided with the fence, and retired hurt. When the score was thirty-one, Birkett was caught by Wall at deep mid-on off Lee’s second ball. He gave a patchy exhibition. , „ . Headley begun steadily, but Grimmett was puzzling both batsmen. Roach continued to make effective leg strokes.
