BUTTER FOR CANADA

Australian Exports

ALARMIST REPORTS By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright . Ottawa, December 4. There is absolutely no danger that the Canadian market will be flooded with Australian butter, said the Trade Commissioner, Mr. MacGregor, when asked to comment on reports that 20 million pounds of butter would be exported to Canada within a few months. He stated that marketing boards had been set up in Australia to regulate exports, and only such butter would be s. t to Canada as was needed to satisfy Its requirements. Mr. MacGregor said Australia was desirous of taking every possible step to preclude prejudicing the Canadian dairy Industry and to avoid the embarrassment of the Canadian Government. To this end butter exports to Canada will be controlled by the Australian Government. “We will send only a proportion of the disclosed shortage of Canadian production. We have invited Canadian dairying and distributing interests to join us In assessing what that shortage is likely to be. Reports of an alarmist character, are regarded as unfriendly to Australia and are calculated to be damaging to the friendly relations between our countries, which we seek to maintain and stimulate."

The whole question of AustralianCanadian trade will be discussed between the Minister of Commerce, Mr. Stevens, and Mr. Parker Maloney when the latter arrives in Canada shortly. CABINET DISCUSSION (Rec. December 5, 6.30 p.m.) Ottawa, December 4. The Federal Cabinet discussed the report that the Canadian market would be flooded with Australian butter. There was no official declaration made at the conclusion of the sitting. The feeling in political circles is such that the condition will not be permitted to arise.

“ALL HER OWN WAY” Vancouver, December 4. Mr. W. A. James, New Zealand agent here, states: “Seemingly with a duty of only one cent per pound, Australia lias the butter trade all her own way. Canada Is short this year, and will have to import, and Australia is likely to supply that market.” .
