' GLENROWAN SUITED Racing at Ashburton FAST TRACK EXPECTED Dominion Special Service* Chrlstcburoli, December 5. The first meeting in Canterbury since the New Zealand Cup gathering will be held by the Ashburton County Racing Club tomorrow. The weather in the district has been fine for the past week, and the going promises to be fast. The card is as follows:— HIGH-WEIGHT HANDICAP, of 100 sovs. One mile.

The,Raider .7 11 Footfall has done very well since his recent racing, and although ho has a solid weight, his task is the opening event, the Highweight Handicap, does not appear beyond him. Smithereens and Dumblane may offer him most opposition.

With Lord Thomond and Painkiller bracketed in the Wlncbmbre Hack Handicap there Is no doubt about what will be the public choice. Both have reefed off some attractive gallops lately, and the latter was responsible for a striking effort yesterday. Giggles wick, Flair, Proud Knight, Coll and Shatter are all entitled to consideration, tlie first-named' especially making a strong appeal. The final issue may be confined to Painkiller, Glggleswick, arid Lord Thomond. . '. '

Unfortunately the principal event of the day, the Tlnwald Handicap,- has attracted only three acceptors. High Court was stated last week to be suffering, from soreness, while Beau Gesto will not be favoured with the prevailing hard track. Glenrowan will therefore have his chance, and with his light impost he will, under the circumstances, be probably sent out favourite. Investors have plenty of material to engage their attention in the Lagmlior Plate. The field is comprised of yet-to-win candidates, but several have shown sufficient form to attract support. A close contest is promised, and the public may show most confidence In Minerval, Night Recital and Coroner.

The Moreton Hack Handicap also should produce an interesting tussle. Hack form is well represented by over halt the acceptors, and speculation will take a wide range, the placed division • will probably be comprised of Pharaoh, Cralgavon, and Shortly. ' ' ■ Special interest will centre in the Wakanui Handicap by the presence of Great Star and True Shaft, who are duo to race at Ellerslie. Mount Boa will not find the going to his liking, and Arrowmlr may not be quite ready. Of the remainder, Miss Mercia may make a welcome return, but form points to Great Star, True Shaft, and Arrowmlr.

ASHBURTON RIDERS Notes from Riccarton Dominion Special Service. Christchurch, December 5. Paquito will be ridden In the Auckland Cup by the stable horseman, G. Humphries, and First Sight, who will not bo produced In the Cup, will have the services of A. E. Ellis in his other engagements at the meeting. Provision has been made for two divisions in the Lagmhor Plate at Ashburton to-morrow, but as the acceptors total only two more than the number allowed, likely withdrawals will probably make the arrangement unnecessary. A. Eastwood Intends to be present at the Woodville meeting next month, his mounts including Black Songster and Bold Front. He will attend the Auckland summer meeting also, and has been engaged for Gay Crest in the Cup, and Autopay in the Railway Handicap. He will ride Great Star in his engagements after the first day. Riding engagements for Ashburton are as follow:—D. O’Connor: Footfall. G, Salt: Jael. A. E. Eastwood: Coll, Mount Bon, Palmary, S. Bryce: Lorette. W. Cooper: JParysla. R. Reed: Knockany, True Shaft, Locksley. G. Humphries: Shatter, Craigavon, Coroner. A. Messervy: Eclair, Proud Knight, Pharaoh, The Raider. R. McCann: Ramo. I. Tilson: Nightcap. Fresh Breese. D. Cotton: Great Star, Ringing Cheer. R. Coveny: Night Recital, Bulolo, Ball Dress. C. Hughes: Giggleswick, Miss Mercia. A. E. Ellis: Beau Geste, Lord Thomond. L. J. Ellis: Glenrowan, Painkiller. Mistress Quickly, whose name appears in tho list for the Lagmhor Plate at Ashburton, is a three-year-old filly by Solferino from Dame Straightlace, and is owned by the breeder, W. J. S. Barrett. Invlctus Is due to have his first race in the Lagmhor Plate to-morrow. He is a good-looking three-year-old by St. Petersburg from Mydora by Sarto, and has shown much promise by his track essays. He received a short course of training last season, but after being gelded a few months ago, was given a spell. He has done well since being brought in about six weeks ago, but is hardly forward enough to be seen at his best to-morrow. ,

RACEHORSE' RETURNING

(Rec. December 5, 6.30 p.m.) Sydney, December 5. The racehorse Full Measure is returning to Auckland on.the Ulimaroa, which sailed to-day.

NOTES AND COMMENTS (By “The Watcher.”) ■;;! Nominations for the summer meeting '.of ! the Wairhrapa Racing Club, to be held onj Thursday and Saturday, January 1 and :.3/« will close-on Monday, at 8 p.m. The tele-‘ graph office at Featherston closes at 5 p.m. ■/ .A, Eastwood has been engaged to ride; the Stewards’ Handicap winner. Autopay, in the A.K.C. Railway Handicap. W. Broughton, who rode him at Riccarton, will be on Karapoti. T. Lloyd arrived from Riccarton yesterday with his team for the Woodville and North Island holiday meetings. Gay Crest, Adelphi, Royal Baby and Desert Song are the horses he brought up. H. N. Wiggins has been engaged for Maui, High Pointin', Golden Shadow, Flute, and La Poupee at Woodville, La Poupee may not be a runner. There have been some bad cases of interference lately, and in the majority the has been obviously intentional. A prominent rider was warned the other day by a stipendiary steward, but it looks as if decisive'action must be taken to check ■what is going on. . v '.

The.latest report from Hastings regarding Hunting Cry is that he is" showing signs of lameness. F. D. Jones has arranged to race a team at the Auckland Racing Club’s summer meeting. He expects to take Paquito, First Sight and Solvent, while Coroner may go as well, for hack events. ; St. Hippo holds the weight-carrying record (8.9) for a three-year-old in the Auckland Cup. Reputation had 8.1 when Warstop beat him by a head. Some amusing blunders are made by novelists who, with little knowledge, attempt to introduce a. sporting touch into their books. f’Ouida” made one of her characters win the Derby three years in succession—with the same horse. Another , of tier heroes had the “proudest moment of ids life when he led in the winner of the Waterloo Cup." - , ■ , ' Tho Cup Double. In 1887 Lochiel won the New Zealand Cup, and-in 1888 captured the Auckland Cup. Warstep ran a dead-heat with Indigo in the first-named race in 1914, and in the following month beat Reputation by a head for first-honours in the Auckland Cup. Scion won. the .double in 1922, and Rapier did likewise in 1027. Good Looks and Breeding. T. H. Gillett has a recent addition to his stable, a three-year-old gelding by Paladin from Divlnia, by Sylvia Park from the Carbine mare, Mongonuf. Divlnia is the dam of Charlatan and Ptinehestown, and her latest representative looks likely to do her further honours, as ho is exceptionally well grown, and has everything to recommend him. Me was bred by Mr. E. Hay, in whose colours he will race probably in the latter part of the season.

Duo for the List. The stewards of the Feilding Jockey Club met after the last race on Monday and decided to recommend to the Racing Conference committee that Denier be placed on the schooling list. On both days this horse proved unmanageable, and refused to face the starter.

A Promising Filly. - Messrs. J. W. and L. W. Storry, who have established a well-equipped stud farm on tlie property occupied by the late Mr. J. McCombe, at Riccarton, and who will be represented for the first time at. tho Trcntbam sales by six highly-bred yearlings, also have a likely two-year-old filly by Arausfo, from Rose of Athens (dam of- Lord Thomond, and the record dividend-payer, Ephlaltcs). She is being given regular educational work on the farm, and it is her owner’s intention to place her in active commission shortly. This filly, who cost SO guineas as a yearling at Trentham, is exceptionally well-grown, and will race under the name of Rose of Orapge.

Sign of, the Times. The experiment of free admission for wo : men was made by the committee of Tattersail’s Club in South -Australia for its meeting on November 22. It was stated to be an unqualified success, and gave animation to the proceedings, there being much more enthusiasm. The totalisator investments showed an Increase compared with other recent meetings, ; (Back in . Work.

F. D. Jones has recommissioned the five-year-old gelding Synonym by Orby’s Pride from Comely (diim of Royal Dispatch), owned by Mr. H. A. Knight. Synonym raced four times as a two-year-old, without gaining distinction, and has since been turned out.. Jones has also made another start on Taragona, a four-year-old brother to Paquito. '

Nightnuirch for Auckland. A. McAulay has decided to.do his holiday racing at Auckland, and he will leave for the north, with Nlghtmarch and True Shaft, in about a fortnight. Both horses are very well, and as a preliminary to the trip True Shaft will be a competitor at Ashburton on Saturday, when he may rgee well in the Wakanu! Handicap. A lot of 'good judges are waiting for True Shaft, Success. ,

Mr. Ken. Duncan, a sun of the, wellknown racing family frpm Huntcrville, has been presented with several “broken down" horses in the last few seasons, mainly for the purpose of hunting. A remarkable run

of luck has attended the careers of these gift horses and, practically without exception/Mr. Duncan has, won jumping and fiat races. Mr. Gatrell gave him Trouble and Risk, but these ominously named jumpers have both won several races since changing hands. His father gave him Otalrl after that Paper Money gelding had seriously injured himself, and he has been a good stake-earner on the flat, and now has excellent prospects as a jumper. The latest cast--off from another stable is the nine-year-old Formative gelding Llandudno, who won at forlorn odds on the opening day at Feild? ing; Llandudno had not previously raced since the 1927-28 season, in which he picked up the Hamilton Handicap. Several other good races are credited to Llandudno, but he was generally considered unsound. Mr. Duncan owes a lot tp “Doc" Knapp, who has handled all his horses with success. Strephon.

Mr. Sol, Green, owner of Strephon, although disappointed at the failure of his horse to do better in England this year, is optimistic concerning the future. ..When lie was in Sydney recently he was asked, “How is Strephon?” and replied: “He is all right. He will be the best horse in England next year.” That opinion will be a surprise to many, who have decided there is no chance of Strephon ever returning to Ills Australian form. Unless he had some solid reason for it, Mr. Green would scarcely be so pronounced concerning the chestnut’s future prospects: ( , ■ Deeley a Great Jockey.

Benjamin Deeley, whose death is reported from Auckland, had not been associated with racing during the last few years, but for a lengthy period he was one of the Dominion’s leading jockeys. He resided during the greater part of his life in Auckland, and most of his riding was done there, though he travelled to meetings in various districts. For several seasons he was retained as the rider of Mr. G. D. Greenwood’s horses, and scored numerous successes oh Gloaming early in the career of that great racehorse. Deeley rode the winners of many of the leading events in New Zealand, his record including the following: New Zealand Cup, Vice-Admiral and Vagabond; Stewards’ Handicap, 'Bimeter; Metropolitan Handicap, Vice-Ad-miral; Members’ Handicap, King Billy and My Lawyer; New Zealand Derby, Balboa, Gloaming and Rossini; Oaks, Warlove; Canterbury Cup, Vice-Admiral and Cherubini; Winter Cup, Chortle and Banksla; -Auckland Cup, Putty and Karo; Great Northern Foal Stakes, Biplane; Great Northern Derby, Sasanof and Gloaming; Great Northern Champagne Stakes, Rukama; Great Northern Guineas, Mullingar, Te Papapa and Athens II; Great Northern Welcome Stakes, General Soult, Miss Winsome and Lady jack; Avondale Stakes, Methuma.
