FATHER MAHONY

Requiem High Mass

Solemn high mass was celebrated for the repose of the soul of the Rev. Father George Mahony, of Wellington, in St. Mary of the Angels Church, Boulcott Street, yesterday. The funeral took place immediately after the service, and was followed by a large number of mourners. , _ . His Grace Archbishop Redwood, Coad-jutor-Archbishop O’Shea, and Bishop Wade (of the North Solomon Islands) were present in the sanctuary. The. mass was sung by the Rev. Father Stanislaus Mahony (brother of the deceased), the Rev. Father McManus, Redemptorist, acting as deacon, and the Rev. Father Kelly, Newtown, as sub-deacon. Archbishop O’Shea recited the absolutions in the church and officiated at the graveside. The eulogy was spoken by the Rev. Father W. Schaefer, of Highden, Palmerston North, who said that the mother church had taught them to gather round the mortal remains of one of her priests, to pray for the repose of his soul, and to remember the lessons the church had always imparted on such solemn occasions. Among those present were many who knew the gifts of grace bestowed upon the departed priest They were aware of his great zeal, the diligent discharge of his office, and the example of faith and piety he had always given. In that solem . moment the church taught the lesson of faith, and that they should rise again after death to a glorious immortality. They on earth only saw the gloomy side, but after passing the portals of death there was a glorious change. Then the soul enjoyed the perfect life, a life which flowed from the Source of all Life—from God Himself. There were a large number of the clergy from all parts of the diocese of Wellington and also from Christchurch present. Dr.. P. F. McEvedy, president, represented the St Patrick’s College Old Boys’ Association, the deceased priest having been an “old boy” of that institution.
