KORO KORO ROAD

Improving Access

POSITION OF WORKERS

In company with Mr. Walter Nash, M.P., a "Dominion’’ reporter yesterday inspected the works now being carried out by the Public Works Department for improved access to Ixoro Ivoro. The gangs of men are already working between the junction of Singer’s Road and the Koro Koro School. The Engineer in Charge, Mr. Hansen, explained that when the work was completed a good road, 18ft. wide, and wider at the corners, would bo provided to Koro Koro. At one spot immediately parallel with the Hutt Road it is proposed to fill in a small gully and carry the road direct, thus cutting out one of the worst bends on the road. While it is not possible to decide definitely, the engineer will do what he can to keep tho maximum number of men on the work until Christmas. He will endeavour, also, to make arrangements to employ a further number tomorrow, and possibly a few more early next week. The desire of the Department is, as far as possible, to give employment to the men most in need, and while it is not possible to decide at a moment s notice, every effort will be made to keep every man employed up to Christmas. The total number would, of course, be determined l>y the number of married men still unemployed who arc m particular need. . Mr. Nash said he was in communication with the Petone Borough Council and the Minister for Public Works to see if it was at all possible to ensure as (far as possible the maximum number of men who will be employed till Christmas. It would be better from the Public Works point of view, and in the interests of efficiency and of economy, if the men were kept on for a period, rather than that they should be rationed for short periods. “To ensure a full consideration of every case,” said Mr, Nash, “it is mecessarv for the Borough Council to ask every married man to register at; the Borough Council office by Monday next. Inquiry at the Petone Borough Council office yesterday brought out the information that arrangements would be made for the men, irrespective of whether they had registered previously, to register on Monday.
