Mr A D Paterson, of Christchurch, returned by the Aorangi after attending an International Road Conference at Washington. The main object was to find a cheaper form of permanent road construcIo| Tiie general opinion, said Mr. Paterson, was that oiled roads would best meet the case of rural districts unable to spend large sums. Oiled roads were ordinary metalled roads soaked with oil in the process of scarifying. They gave an excellent dustless surface, and when they became corrugated could be easily rescarified any rolled. They were the cheapest type of roads possible.
