CARE OF NEW CAR

Limitation of Speed It is important that the car should be throttled down to 25 or 30 miles an hour for tlie first 1000 miles. During this period, a pint of thin oil mixed with each five gallons of petrol in the fuel tank will help the lubrication. This oil, injected with the fuel into the combustion chambers, will help lubricate the cylinder wails, while the pistons fit snugly and perhaps too tightly to permit the oil in the crankcase from getting through effectively. Due to the grinding action of gears and other parts wearing against one another, minute particles of metal Will wear off during the running-in.'process and get into the lubricating oil. This oil, therefore, quickly becomes useless and even harmful. It should be drained out of the crankcase and replaced with fresh oil at the end of the first 500 miles and after the 1500-mile mark. After that the oil need not be changed for the next 2000 to 4000 miles. The heavy oil or grease in the differential also should be drained and renewed after the first 1000 miles. * CLEAN BEARINGS Wheel bearings do a tremendous amount of work and in return get about as little care as any part, of the car. Removing the wheel and washing the bearings, inner and outer, in kerosene is definitely worth while. Another tip on bearings that should be borne in mind is that the hub caps, lubricating those of the front wheels, may show an adequate supply of grease when inspected although the quality of the lubricant is dangerously low. If it is a silver colour, replace it. — . . ■ • The man who doubles up with mirth when a woman has difficulty in driving through a ten-foot garage door, usually sobers up when he tries to thread a needle. . The adjustment of the front wheels for proper pitch and toe-in should be checked at least twice yearly.
