POST IN SAMOA

Native Affairs Control The calling of applications for the position of Under-Secretary of Native Affairs in Western’Samoa has given rise to criticism on the ground that applications should not have been solicited beyond the field in which the right type of man might be secured. However, the vacancy created by the retirement of the Rev. F._G. Lewis has been announced by the Public Service Commissioner in the staff circular, thus indicating that it is open only to officers of the New Zealand Pnblic Service. : ','.'7 ■>/' ' . /' ,■ , . It is understood that the belief is that the right type of nian to fill this important post will be secured from the Public Service’staff. The officer appointed will probably have a knowledge of legal matters and of native administration, as New Zealanders' have had experience in dealing with Maori and Rarotongan affairs. However, if a suitable man is not found within the service general applications will be called. The Samoan Administration on the European side is practically part of the New Zealand Public Service. Those appointed to positions are usually transferred from the New Zealand service for two or three years, and they find toe Treasury Public Works and other departments conducted on similar lines to those in the Dominion. Having completed a reasonable term in the Samoan service they can resume their duties with their former department in Now Zealand.
