THE FEATHER CROWN

Fairhall Arrives

Tommy Fairhall, professional. welterweight chanipion of Australia, arrived from Sydney yesterday and will meet Ted Morgan at the Wellington Town Hall on December 9, ' The Australian champion’s stocks have slumped a little since'Jiis defeat at Syd-’ ney at the hands ot Rus Crichter recently. The latter, who is only 19 years of age,- considerably surprised tbe welter champion by' continually forcing the fight. A smashing right to the jaw in the third round rocked Fairhall. Many people, however, consider that tlie youngster took the champion by surprise ami that there will be a different story to tell when the pair meet for the title. Morgan will be certain to take advantage of the opportunity which tbe Wellington Boxing Association has given him to prove that he is in the front rank of boxers. As both men can hit, the coptest should be full of thrills.

Tbe Feather Crown. Keen interest is being taken in Tommy Donovan’s challenge to Johnnie Deckle for the featherweight championship of the Dominion. The contest is billed for Napier on Novcinber 29, and there will be certain to be'a large Taranaki contingent present to cheer the Waitara fireman on. The first time Donovap had a tilt at Leckic’s title the champion whipped him pretty severely, but since then Donovan has boxed a draw with Deckle. The tussle at Napier should attract a great crowd. Will Have to be Careful.

Y’oung Llew Edwards, of Australia, who covered himself with glory by defeating Johnnie Lcckie at New Plymouth recently, will need to guard against putting on weight rapidly. He may return to Australia, remarks a Melbourne writer, more as a legitimate lightweight than a natural fesjher. Edwards will be quite safe in Sam Chapman’s hands. O’Malley Again. Jack O’Malley, the youthful New Zealander, continues to do well in tbe ring in Australia. .At the Sydney Stadium on Saturday night, he gained u points decision over Leo Bandias, the Victorian heavyweight champion, who recently defeated Yoqng. The New Zealander chased the champion all round the ring during the first half of the battle. Llew Edwards is a great admirer of O'Malley’s, and declares that O’Malley will go far in tlie game. O’Malley, by the way, bailed originally from Greyroouth, and not from Hawke’s Bay, as has been stated. ,

Amateur Tourney. Ap all-amateur tournament will be staged at. Miramar on December 2,- when Wairarana and Wellington boxers will supply the bill. Short Jabs. Apparently it only takes one round to win the world's professional lightweight championship, Tony Canzoneri took tbe crown from Al Kinger in New York recently in. the first round, and Singer took it from Sammy Mundell three months ago by putting him to sleep in the first round. One round battles seem to be tbe fashion in the United States at present. Mickey WnUter, world’s middleweight champion, polished off Mike Mandell in less than one round on'October 1 , put his opponent down for two c <’ u " l /he nine, aud had him so helpless that me i jeeferee stopped ihe slaughter.
