COMMONWEALTH & DOMINION LINK With a view to the speed of its steamers, approximating that of the motor vessels, which have already established a reputation for fast passages In the Australian and New Zealand trade, the Commonwealth and Dominion Line. Ltd., has installed the Bauer-Wnch system in nine steamers (states the “Syren and Shipping ). The results are reported to be highly satisfactory to the owners. Not only Is there a saving in tlie cost of fuel, but the of the Installation Is that each of the vessels has developed about 1000 h-P. extra, and has increased her speed by °™r one knot—all this by the utilisation of the exhaust steam. The Port Hardy, ™ the vessels to be fitted, has made the voyajre from London to Melbourne in 37 days. The business of shipowning is singular In one respect. Whatever the stat® m the industry, the shipowner must for ever be spending In order to keep his v ®ss®ls up to date, or the keenness of competition will put him behind his rivals. So rapid are tho advances in marine propulsion that what is new to-day may be out of date to-morrow, so that the demands upon his resources and enterprise are insistent.
