An accident to the motor-float conveying Rewa, Rory Mor, Mountain Heath and Brittany from Greenmeadows to Waipawa on Monday caused tlfe withdrawal of the latter from the Maiden.and also interfered with the chances of Moun-
tain Heath and Rory Mor in the Cup, as they had to be rushed to the weighing enclosure, which no doubt upset Owner-trainer W. Garrett, of Auckland and formerly of Masterton, who has been spending an extended holiday in the Old Country, is expected to arrive back in New Zealand toward the end of the month. An agent on the lookout for a good handicap performer for Australian racin'- priced Lordlike during the recent meeting at Trentham, but as something like 800 guineas was asked no business was done. There was only one horse in the hack uprint at Waverley, Royal Routine being many removes from the class opposed to him (says an exchange). He will win some good sprint' races. lady Quex is reported to have run a solid race at Waverley, but there is no doubt that she does not like the heavy going. This mare is very forward just now and she will soon lie paying her wj.
Hopwood’s Double Attempt.
On more than one occasion the BreWer Handicap and the Waverley Cup have formed the . medium for a bit of a “plunge” by owners who have attempted to bring off the double. It is many years since one horse has succeeded in winning the‘two events, though several years ago a first and a second were recorded in one attempt. On Monday Hopwood was started in both events (says the "Wanganui Chronicle”). In the Brewer Handicap the Bisogne gelding was the elect of backers, but at the finish he was in third place a length behind Melissa and He was rather neglected when the~chances of the Cup candidates •were being considered by investors, there being only one' of the contestants carrying less than the Strat-ford-trained (gelding. He gave backers a bit of. a fright, howeVer, for he was in the firing-line at. the finish and only went under by half a length. As it was those who followed up their Brewer Handicap investments would show a nice profit. I Riders of Amounis.
During the compilation of his record stake winnings seven riders have been successful on Amounis. The first jockey to score on him was A. Hunter.. Then K. Bracken was associated with him in many successes in the colours of Mr. A. P. Wade, and it is a coincidence that Bracken renewed acquaintance with the Magpie gelding recently, after a lapse of several seasons. F. McGrath, the trainer of Amounis, was desirous of securing Bracken for the Caulfield Cup, but W. Cook bad been engaged for several weeks. Prior to the Cup, Cook had only once ridden Amounis, that being in track work on the morning of the race. J. Toohey, J. Munro, 11. Jones, and the late H. Cairns are other jockeys* who have won on Amounis. Aucklanders in Sydney.
Mr. W. Scholium, an Auckland owner, who raced True Blood and Royal Blood in Sydney, has five horses in work at Canterbury Park under the charge of H. Doyle, says the Sydney “Sun.” One, Little Gift, raced inconspicuously in the hurdle race on the concluding day at Randwick. The other members of the team are Manx Cat, a four-year-old filly by Catmint from Bleriot; Shine On, a five-ycar-old mare, by General Latour from Glittering Sands; Kahakura, a four-year-old Catmint —Queen Boadicea gelding; and a 14.2 pony, King Lupin, by Day Comet. The St. Legcr Winner.
After Singapore’s victory in the St. Leger at Doncaster last month, a newspaper representative, when extending his congratulations to Lord Glanely, asked him. if there was anything outstanding about the colt as a. yearling that induced him to pay such a big price as 12,500gn5. for him. Lord Glanely replied: “I bought him not only because of his good looks, but also because I thought he would one day make a good stallion.” Captain Boyd Rochfort, when offering his congratulations at the same time, recalled to Lord Glanely that he was the under-bidder for the colt as a yearling. His present owner then remarked: “You will remember that I arrived at the sale ring only in time to put in the last few bids for him." "If you had not put in an appearance at the sale ring that day, I should have secured him for probably seven or eight thousand, as we were the only bidders for him nt the finish,” said Captain Boyd Rochfort.
Good Tiling Beaten. Although Fernden won decisively in the Waverley Cup there is little doubt Ruanui was a good thing beaten (says.a Wanganui writer). The field galloped in line from the barrier rise until going out of the straight, and in the scramble for positions the Limond gelding was nearly knocked off the course. When J. M. Pine got him settled down again he was a dozen lengths behind the field, and had then only half a mile to go. His pilot did not call upon him to make up any ground until the distance was reached, and, .when the pressure was applied, Ruanui ran through the field as if the rest were stopping to walk. However, his great effort was too late, but he got within two lengths of the winner to finish fourth.
