STORMY PASSAGE
Squadron in Tasman DAMAGE TO DESTROYERS A very stormy passage across the Tasman Sea was experienced by the Java and her attendant destroyers. Not long after leaving Sydney the ships ran into bad weather, caused by a violent cyclonic disturbance. At first the strong winds were variable, but ultimately the squadron was battling against a hard easterly gale and high seas. The ships, which were to have come across at economical cruising speed, had to heave-to for some time, and on one day they were doing barely four knots. The destroyer Evertsen bears remarkable evidence of the violence of the gale. A heavy sea broke over her forecastle bead with such violence as to bend back the lower port side of the foremost gun shield, on which several fittings were also damaged. It is understood that the Do Ruyter sustained damage to one of ,her hull plates. This, while not very serious, will necessitate her going either on the patent slip at Wellington, or into drydock at Auckland for repairs.
