FINANCIAL POSITION
Britain’s Prospects CHANCELLOR OPTIMISTIC (Rec. October 17, 5.5 p.m.). British Wireless. Rugby, October 16. The Chancellor of the Exchequer, Mr. Philip Snowden, speaking at the Lord Mayor's dinner at the Mansion House last night, stated that lie intended to carry out large conversion operations when he thought the time was favourable.
Mr. Snowden spoke optimistically regarding Britain’s financial position and prospects. He said the British were apt to consider their position as exceptionally bad. That certainly was not the case. It was n wonder they had withstood the world blast so well, and they were now suffering less than some of the other great industrial countries. During the last six months Britain had maintained a larger proportion of her production than, for Instance, Germany or the United States.
Mr. Snowden said lie would do everything possible to avoid imposing new taxation.
