CAULFIELD CUP DAY

Fine Weather Predicted By Telegraph—Press Association— Copyright (Rec. October 17, 8.20 p.m.) Melbourne, October In ■ Tlie weather forecast for Caulfield Cup day is fine and pleasant. Panola, Killarney and Carry On, have arrived from Sydney, in charge ot George Price, who also has Veilmond here. The Cup candidate, Cragford, has won his last five races. NOTES AND COMMENTS (By “The Watcher.”) A. McAulay with Nightmarch and True Shaft arrived by the Auckland mail train yesterday and went on to Kiccarton by the Wahine last night. H. N. Wiggins to-day at Mastertoil will ride Tobaccoland, Joie de V al, Robbie’s Mistake, Duellona, White Doe, and either Pahu or Grecian, probably the latter. Monastic, runner-up at a good price to Painkiller in the Spring Stakes at liniaru on Thursday, is the latest member or a first-class galloping family to come into the limelight. He is a two-year-old bay colt by Pombal from Cowl, dam of Hational, The Monk, Mask and Habit, and like them was bred at Koatanui. Monastic was purchased at the Trentham sales for 350 guineas and races in the intorests of the Reeftou owner, Miss M. G. Wilson. It is stated that Locblaggan, the two-year-old daughter of Glentruin, who beat ah but Fair Weather iu the Dunedin McLean Stakes, has done well since and will start next in the C.J.C. IV elcome Stakes. It is not intended to do much with her this season, as she is to be given time to mature. Good Form Earlier. . Tea Queen, who is due to run m the Lansdowne Handicap at Masterton today, did no racing in New Zealand last season, but in August of last year she ran second to Beleaire in the Three-year-old Handicap at Menangle and a month later also ran in the Three-year-old Handicap at Hawkesbury. These were her only races as a three-year-old. As a two-year-old Tea Queen showed some very promising form —she. was alniost equal to the best at times. For instance, she finished iir front of all (including Eaglet) bar Gay Ballerina at the Auckland summer meeting, and a month later, on Wellington Cup Day, she won her division of the two-year-old handicap. She finished third to Ceremony and Equitant in the Pacific Handicap in the autumn, so it will be seen that she has only got to come right to win money this season. Duellona might win a substantial stake or two this term.

An Improver. ■ Lady Rene did not meet a good lot when she won the Pukekaraka Handicap of. six furlongs at Otaki last Monday, but she won her race at the right end and will do better. By Acre from Rene, she ranks as a half-sister to Printenips, Cerf, and Arpent, who were also bred and raced by the Trentham trainer, A. Goodman. Lady Rene at Masterton today is Asked to go seven furlongs. So far she has not raced beyond six, but there is no ieason why she should not get a middle distance

Royal Ruler, who was recently sold by Mr. B. E. Hart to Miss I. R. Goldwater, has been repurchased by Mr. Hart, and the transfer was approved by the Auckland Racing Club committee on Tuesday. Tunbridge, top weight in the Lawn Handicap, one mile, to be run at Masterton, has not had a race this season. He won four events last season, three of them being high-weight handicaps, run over one mile and a quarter. In the October Hurdle Race at Flemington on October 4, the New Zealandowned Conjuror II started favourite but could only finish fourth. The race was won by Alphine Rose, which is by Mountain King, from the New Zealand-bred mare Martuk. The Flaxmere-bred Horoscope, carried top weight and ran third. The New Zealand-bred Hot Spring, ridden by Drinkwater, ran second in the Glenelg Handicap at the South Australian Jockey Club’s meeting on October 4, while another New Zealand-bred member of Mr. E. E. Jolly’s team, Salt Petrel, ran third in the following race, the Brighton Handicap.

Has Been Working Well. When Dolomite goes right he is a good little galloper, but there is just a suspicion that he likes his own rules about the racing game. His first success last season was in the Otaio Plate, one mile and a quarter, run at Riccarton last November, in which he was timed to run the distance in 2.5 4-5. Later in tlie season he carried 9.6 and won the Victory Hack Handicap, one mile and a distance, at Wanganui. He was shortly afterward successful in the Marlborough Cup, one mile and a quarter, in which he carried 9.0 and won comfortably. Dolomite, who is owned by Mr. 11. Murphy, of Wellington, and trained at Trentham, is looking and moving particularly well just now, and if he races up to his track work at Masterton to-day he should be on hand at the finish.

Now Zealand Horse Doped. When Mr. C. Boyle's hurdler Conjuror failed to make a showing in his race at Flemington on October 4 his form was in such marked contrast to what he had displayed just previously • and also so much out of keeping with his improved condition that his connections were not only disappointed but sorely puzzled. The Press cable has informed us that Conjuror has been found to be suffering from a couple of broken ribs, which would account for the reversal of form, but private information received this week puts a different complexion on the affair. Conjuror was doped, just as Wise Force was doped. It has affected him to the extent that lie will probably be returned nt once to New Zealand to recuperate. Rational has also done, poorly on the trip, though Rasouli on the other hand has thrived and improved. Cabled advice within the last day or two received at Trentham states that E. J. Murtagh has shifted with these three horses from Melbourne to Sydney, so that it is probable they will return home before the date originally intended.

Paperchase in Bad Way. The Paper Money—Stardancer mare Paperchase, who is now owned by Mr. J. Porter, is in a bad way at present. She had a dead foal by Polazel, and for a time her life was despaired. It is hoped now that she will recover, but even if that is tlie case her recovery will be slow, so there is no intention of breeding from her this season.

Two-year-olds for Trentham. The Riccarton trainer E. Scoullnr will make a trip to Trantham next week with Hazlett’s two-year-old Irish Chieftain, by Chief Ruler from Sprig of Erin, and Chief Light, by Chief Ruler from Illume. These promising juveniles were taken south for the Dunedin meeting, but they were not raced ou account of the heavy track. They are a goodlooking pair who gallop very attractively.

May Improve with Age. When Duelloim scored in the Trial Plate at the Carterton meeting twelve months ago and in her four Subsequent starts secured a further win and three seconds, big things were expected of her. _ However, although she proved equal to winning two more races in hack company and later finished third in the Great Northern Oaks, her form was nothing to enthuse over. Duellona is by Paladin from War Lady, by Martian from "flfly kucy (winner New Zealand Cup. 1.109). by Seaton Delaval from Hilda, so no fault can be found with her breeding. . She lias thickened out a lot in the interval between her three and four-year-old seasons and lately has been doing good, work on the Trentham tracks, lhe Paladins improve with age. and Duellona on appearances looks like coming to better form this term.
