NATIONAL TESTS

Women’s Golf Tourney NORTH BEATS SOUTH The Foursomes Winners Fortune smiled on the opening of the 34th championship meeting of the New Zealand Ladies’ Golf Union, at Herctaunga, yesterday. The most picturesque course in the Dominion was bathed in sunshine, fairways and greens were in excellent order, and what wind there was was very light. Strangely enough the form displayed was not under the ideal conditions what would be expected from such an important gathering. The principal event was the interisland match between teams of eight aside, which resulted in a sweeping victory for the North Island by six games to two. The championship foursomes were carried off by Mrs. Guy Williams and Miss Watson, who completed the round in 81. The North Island v. South Island match resulted as follows, the North Island players being mentioned first in each instance: — Miss Gaisford (Marton) beat Mrs. Dodgshun (Otago), 4 and 3. Mrs. Guy Williams (Masterton) lost to Miss O. Kay (Otago), 8 and 7. Miss Barnett (Miramar) beat Miss Chrvstall (Christchurch), 6 and 5. Miss Culling (Auckland) lost to Miss Acheson (Nelson), 4 and 2. Mrs. Hosking (Auckland) beat Miss Beadel (Christchurch), 7 and 5. Miss Watson (Manawatu) beat Mrs. Slee (Westport), 4 and 3. Miss Petrie (Miramar) beat Miss Rutherford (Hawarden), 3 and 2. Mrs. Foreman (Miramar) beat Mrs. Godby (Christchurch), 4 and 2. Miss Gaisford Beats Mrs. Dodgshun. Miss Bessie Gaisford, the 23-year-old Marton player, who has already won the Napier, Hastings, Dannevirke; and Wanganui championships this season, was promoted to the honour of playing as No. 1 for the North Island, and justified the confidence reposed in her by defeating Mrs. Dodgshun, of Dunedin, the New Zealand lady champion, by 4 up and 3 to P Miss Gaisford went out in 42 to Mrs. Dodgshun’s 46, and was 2 up at the turn. Both played steadily on the home run, but the Marton player drew 3 up by recording a beautifiul 2 at the fourteenth (143 yards), and took the match at the fifteenth with a 15ft. for a 4, after both had failed to reach the green from the tee. . A stylist. Miss Gaisford hits a long ball, keeps good direction, handles her irons well, and is a deadly putter. Miss Kay’s Brilliance. But if the North Island triumphed in the battle between the No. I’s, Miss Olive Kay, the youthful Dunedin player, fully avenged tlie South in the tussle between the No. 2’s. Playing brilliant golf, the Dunedin girl ran out in t-wo over 4’s, and had the commanding lead of 7 up at the turn against such an able player as 'Mrs. Guy Williams, of Masterton. Miss Kay went on to record a 3 at the tenth, and took the game by 8 up and 7to go. How Miss Kay was hitting them can be understood when it is stated that she got a 3 at the first (279 yards), a 4 at the sixth (410 yards), and a 3 at the tenth (248 yards). She took two over 4’s for the eleven holes played. Mrs. Williams appeared to find the greens much too fast after the slower turf at Palmerston North. Miss Acheson (Nelson) was the only other South Island player to register a win, and she handled her clubs very deftly to outplay Miss Culling by 4 and 2. 'rhe’ Nelson player always had a little in hand and was dormy four. Miss Culling took the short fifteenth, but Miss Acheson took the match at the next hole by running down a 20ft. putt, which cannoned off her opponent’s ball on the lip of the hole for a win in 4 to 5. The remaining games saw the North Island players have a decided advantage. Championship Foursomes There was a very.large entry for the championship foursomes, in conjunction with which a foursomes handicap was played.

A good-sized gallery followed the game in which Mrs. Guy Williams and Miss S. Watson and Miss Olive Kay and Miss M. Pay ton (Rotorua) played round together, and they had the satisfaction of following the winning pair, as Mrs. Williams and Miss Watson, both of whom played very steadily, took the championship with a round of 81, 41 out and 40 home. The winners will hold the Hawke’s Bay Cups for a year and will receive replicas of them. Miss Kay and Miss M. Payton could do nothing right, and spent most of their time in the bunkers of repentance, but even here Miss Kay showed that there are few shots which she cannot execute, her explosion shots being particularly good. M. Whyte and Mrs. G. Stott won the foursomes handicap with 95 —20—75. The following were the best cards returned in the foursomes competition : — t Miss M. Whyte and Mrs. G. Stott, 95— Mrs. Guy Williams and Miss S. Watson, 81—4—771 Miss Petrie and Miss Gambrill, 83—G—77. . Mrs. C. Bell and Mrs. Earle, 95—17—78. Miss Rathbone and Miss Innes, SS—ft—79. The Championship The first round of the New Zealand women’s championship will be played this morning, and the second round to-morrow morning. The game between Miss Bessie Gaisford (Marton) and Miss S. Watson (Manawatu) should provide the keenest struggle this morning, and it is unfortunate (hat two such able players should have to meet in the very first I'ouud.
