CRICKET COACHING

Move in Valley Schools Maintaining that the greatest benefit to be derived from coaching is to catch the promising cricketer young, Mr. W. S. Brice moved at the annual meeting of the Petone Cricket Club: “That a system of coaching schoolboys in the Hutt Valley be inaugurated, to be supported by the Petone and Hutt Cricket Clubs.’’ The motion was carried, and Messrs. Brice, Patrick and Nissen were appointed a committe to put the scheme on a proper footing. All schools in Petone have been visited by the committee, with the result that the headmasters have promised to give every assistance. Mr. Pegler, of the Hutt club, is approaching schools iu Lower Hutt. The idea is to engage a coach (Mr. L. T. Cobcroft is the man the committee recommend), who will take these boys in hand two afternoons a week in Petone, and two afternoons in Lower Hutt for the Hutt boys, the wickets and material to be supplied by the Petone and Hutt clubs. . The coach will also visit the school practices on occasions (he will be assisted by voluntary coaches in this duty), when general coaching and instructions will be given to all boys. Addresses on cricket by prominent players will also be arranged, and every encouragement given to each school to maintain permanent teams. The cost of the scheme is to be borne by donations from each school, and the balance of the money required will be collected from cricket enthusiasts. This scheme will, it is maintained, in ■no way interfere with the Wellington association’s coach, but, on the contrary, will be of great assistance to him in the future, as the best boys after leaving school will be drafted to the local clubs, and will consequently have a chance of being passed on to the Wellington coach for further tuition. The Petone section will probably commence operations on the Petone Recreation Ground next week.
