Youthful Morals
Sir, —May I request you to give publicity to the following protest:—The women of the W.O.T.U.,—the largest and oldest woman’s society in New. Zealand—protest against the attitude taken up in Mr. Butchers’s book. While deploring the immorality pointed out, we wish to know why all the blame is placed upon our girls. Surely the men are equally guilty. And if a protest is to be made should not both sexes be equally blamed? We also would like to point out that measures to safeguard the girls —such as the appointment of women police, the restriction of liquor consumption in cabarets and dance halls—have been repeatedly asked for by women’s societies and refused by a male Government. Instead of blaming our girls, why not help the mothers to safeguard them? —I am, ete., NELLIE PERYMAN, W.C.T.U. Dominion Officer. Wellington, October 16.
