GAS MANUFACTURE

Petone and Lower Hutt In September the Petone and Lower Hutt Gas Lighting Board manufactured 9,989,000 cubic feet of gas from 689 ’ tons 8 cwt. of coal, an increase in gas manufacture of 1,131,000 cubic feet compared with September, 1929. It was stated by the manager that in September. 1929, the board could not meet the demand for gas until it had the carburetting plant in operation a few days before the end of the month, and the holders were empty on many days. Coal in stock on October 1 amounted to 883 tons 8 cwt. Coke sold amounted to 239 tons 2 cwt., including 128 tons to the Railway Department. Tar sales amounted to 1538 gallons, and on October 1 16,000 gallons were estimated to be in stock.

Thirty-seven new services were installed during September, 31 of them being in Lower Hutt.
