Wellington Competitions PIANO SCHOLARSHIP Women’s Test Recital < Nineteen classes in the Wellington Competitions Society’s musical and elocutionary festival were disposed of yesterday. The attendances throughout the day sessions were considered very satisfactory, though more people were present at the attractive entertainment in the evening. ' ~ , , . z The principal event decided last evening was the Bristol Piano _ Company s piano scholarship. This consisted of two parts:—(a) A set piece, “Nocturne in A,” No. 4 (Field); and (b) a piece selected by the performer. The scholarship was won by Mr. W. Maurice Hood (Kelburn), with 78 points, and Miss I. C. Highet (Hataitai) was placed second with 72 points. The piano duet class was won by Jean Brown (Kilbirnie) and Enid Schon (Wellington), who secured 8a points. ! t. -Of special interest was a recitation by a New Zealand author, “A Song of the Saddle” (S. S. MacKenzie) for either lady or gentleman. This class drew a total of 20 entries, and was won by Mrs. M. Tonks, with Mr. G. A. C. Power second. The final of the New Zealand test recital, ladies, was also decided. This consisted of two pieces, laul Revere’s Ride” (Longfellow) and an “own selection.” Miss Madge Thomas was the successful competitor, with Miss G. Carr second. Variety was added to the programme by a children’s chorus class, 15 to 20 voices, which Guilford Terrace Convent School won. In addition a dash of colour was introduced by a ballet “Movement de Ballet,” presented by Mr. Joe Knowsley s school of dancing. The judge, Mr. Ernest Jenner, said that Miss Withers had played the set piece, “Nocturne” in A (Field) better than any of the other competitors. Her marks awarded on the own selection piece had pulled her down. Mr. Hood’s pedalling wanted watching, while Miss Highot’s tone was too angular for a nocturne.
