The annual reunion and smoke concert of members of the Huia Hockey Club was held on Saturday night, Mr. McAlister presiding. Among the toasts honoured were: “The Club,” proposed by Mr, J. There was a specially large attendance, and the affair went with a good swing. Miss Kitto presented the trophies for the season, silver cups being handed to representatives of the winning teams. The following trophies were presented:—Senior seven-a-side: College Old Girls; junior seven-a-side, Technical College; senior A competition for 1930, Hutt;; senior B competition for 1930. WOMEN’S HOCKEY (By “Critic.”) The K Cup, the trophy coveted by all interprovincial women’s hockey teams, was presented to the New Zealand Women’s Hockey Association in 1924 byMr. S. Kirkpatrick, of Nelson. Mr. Kirkpatrick, who was patron of the Nelson Association at the time, was very anxious to do something to promote the interest of hockey among the young women of New Zealand, with the result that the K Cup came into being. The cup is of solid silver and is valued at £lOO. It stands 18in. high, and, in honour of the donor, has a massive capital K on the lid. The inscription reads as follows: “Presented to the New Zealand Ladies’ Hockey Association by Mr. S. Kirkpatrick for annual competition at the annual championship tournaments.” At the time of the presentation Mr. Kirkpatrick also decided to donate button badges to the individual members of the winning team. The present holder of the cup is Southland.

Tbe Players. Miss Vera Newman is gaining great experience at full-back for Hutt senior “B.” On Saturday she had more than her ordinary share of the work, but seemed to tackle her task in joyful mood. If she learns from advice she will not be long out of the “A” team.

Judging on her performances at centrehalf for Hospital, Miss Harris must very nearly, if not actually, catch the selector’s eye next Saturday. She appeals to the writer as the most suitable to fill the position of centre-half against Wairarapa. Miss D. Leonard has made unusual progress in the game since joining the Old Girls’ junior “B” team. She was at her best on Saturday and gave the Huia goalkeeper no end of worry. _ Her goals were all well-earned. She is the type of player who will develop into a more than ordinary wielder of the stick, and her play next season will be awaited with interest. Ccntics’ centre-forward played an outstanding game against Hospital. She was a source of worry to the opposing defence all through the game and had bad luck in not pulling her team out of the fire. So well did she play that, had her iuners realised the value she was to her team and given her the necessary support, there is no denying that Ceiitics would have been the first team to beat Hospital. The centre-half must also come in for special commendation. The manner in which she tricked the Hospital attack and kept her forwards at their work was indeed an eye-opener to many. She was cleverness in herself, but there were a few weaknesses in her plav that were noticeable. On the whole, she gave a surprisingly sound display and the good showing of Centics on Saturday is due in no small means to this enterprising half-back. Miss Smith was prominent for Wesley against Ramblers on Saturday, scoring two fine goals. She is a very aggressive player and of great assistance to Wesley. Misses Bailey and Watson were active for Swifts junior team against Wenerei last week. Both worked exceptionally hard for the success of their team, aud well deserved the success of two goals each. Miss Haddocks also played well, and scored a good goal. Miss Johnstone, right full-back for Hospital, was mainly responsible in saving her team from defeat on Saturday. She gave a solid performance, and is the best of junior full-backs that have played this season. Her partner was inclined to fumble and weaken in clearances. Miss Calver was seen to much advantage for Wenerei seniors against Old Girls. Besides scoring a goal she showed clever stick play that baffled Old Girls defence. Mrs. Dunne, Wesley’s centre-forward, plavs a very good game, but would be well advised to keep her position more in the centre and avoid crowding her inside left. She seems to place too much confidence in the right wiug. completely starving the left. She is dangerous in the circle, liits well and places plenty of force into her strokes, but fails to follow in sufficiently. General Notes.

The Wellington tournament team leave to-night for Invercargill. A representative match between Wellington juniors nnd Wairarapa will be played at Carterton on Saturday, September C. The final of the rose bowl competition for Horowhenua women’s teams is to be played at Otaki on Saturday afternoon. Miss Sybil Swinburne, who was originally selected for the left wing position of the tourney team, is unable to make the trip. The same applies to Mcsdnmes F. Prince and Sundgren. These three players are too valuable not to be missed in the team.
