During the controversy on the proposal to construct a road through the old Sydney Street Cemetery-some comment was made on the unkept eondition of many of the old graves in the place where Wellington has buried many of its dead since the very early days. One grave near the Bolton Street entrance catches the eye owing to the displaced marble slab being held in a slanting position against a tree by a chain which formerly served as a fence. The inscription relates that it is the grave of “Randle Cot ton Ma inwaring, third son of Sir Harry Mainwaring, of Plover Hall, Cheshire, died September 6.187t>. 34 years of ago.” The present holder of t|ie title is Sir Harry Stapleton Mainwaring (son of the fourth baronet), who did not succeed to the title until 1906. and was horn three years after the death in Wellington bf Randle Cotton Mainwaring. who was probably an uncle of the present holder of the titlfl. v "
