HAD TO COME

Niemeyer Report SHOCK FOR AUSTRALIANS Australia Is very distressed about Sir Otto Niemeyer’s report, according to Mr. E. W. P. Bucholz, who returned to Wellington yesterday from a three-montbs’ trip to the Straits Settlement and Australia. “The Australians knew it had to come,” continued Mr, Bucholz, “but they did not think it would have to be so drastic. It does not seem likely that there will be any recovery for about two years, but some business firms are looking forward to a revival after that period. They are basing their expectations on a probable record wheat output, and drastic reductions in Government expenditure.” . It seemed very likely that the workers would have to go past their unions and work for what they could get. In the outlying districts, he was told, some of the men were already working for under the pward rates. Many were out of work because they would not take less than those rates.
