Dairying and Child Labour

Sir, —As a farmer of many . years' standing? I take strong exception to the remarks of Councillor W. H. Bennett contained in thia morning’s issue under the heading “City and Suburban,” where he says that “child labour does not apply to. any of the farms supplying the municipal milk department,” which, by way of inference, is that child labour is used on the nearby farmers’ farms. As one who knows as least as much as, if not more than, Mr. Bennett does of the working conditions that apply on farms generally in the Wellington province, I certainly would not take such a presumption unto myself. But. Sir, if the price offered by the council to a member of my association quite recently for his milk is any indication of the methods likely to be used ip milk production, personally I would say that child labour would be far too expensive (at least, for white ones).—l am, etc., J. PURCHASE, Chairman, W.S.F.A. August 22.
