VARIED DAY

Dickens & Shakespeare COMPETITION RESULTS Women’s Solo Winners For the second day of the Wellington Competitions, yesterday, there were encouraging audiences at all sessions. Three halls, the Town Hall, the Concert Chamber, and Nimmo’s Hall, were fully occupied during the day. The concert in the evening, which for the most part consisted of items by those competitors who were recalled from earlier in the day, was thoroughly varied in character. A children’s action song, “Come Lassies and Lads, by Joan Maunder’s Children’s Chorus, was very picturesque, while a ballet in costume, “Way Out West,” by Mr. Joe Knowsley’s School of Dancing, was respon.ible for a measure of gaiety. Miss Ailsa Dillon (Hataitai) was successful in the mezzo-soprano solo “The Lass With a Delicate Air,” and Miss Weno Tahiwi (Otaki) gained highest marks in the contralto solo “Sea Rapture.” The Shakespearean recitation class, “Antony’s Speech” from “Julius Caesar,” was won by Mr. W. J. Mountjoy, junior, with 85 points, while Mr. C. C. Brown, portraying “Grandfather Smallweed” in the Dickens character sketch, secured the highest marks in the section. The festival will continue at the three halls again to-day, and an attractive programme will be presented in the evening at the Town Hall.
