FUN AT PETONE

Two Balls in Play Two very amusing incidents happened at the Pet’one Oval on Saturday during the Rugby match between l’etone aud Old Boys.' ' ~ , „ x Old Boys went down the field, ball at toe, with spectacular dash. Wylie dribbled the ball over the line, and then, he dribbled it out again. A'- second time he dribbled it in goal, only to have the bad fortune to see Elvy pounce on it and force down. Again were the Old Boys forwards hammering at the l’etone line, and Petone was striving just as desperately to keep them out. Without warning, a Soccer ball trickled its way among the struggling packs. Immediately the one solid pack sjlit into two. each pack concentrating. on a ball. Macpherson (Old Boys) saw his chance, nnd with sheer weight and strength, flung himself on the ball. Loud Laughter went up from all around when it was seen that Macpherson had fallen on the Soccer ball. At the same time the Rugby ball went over the line, and a melee gcll upon it. The referee (Mr. T. Fletcher) ordered a scrum, and a minute later Petone cleared. Another unusual incident occurred ivhen Davis, securing the bull, well inside his own twenty-five, nnd only two or three yards in from the side-line fthe wind was beh’n'l him), kicked '■-trniaht down the field. Three nr four of 'he Old Boys team, foiled bv the strong <mn in their eyes, missed fielding the ball. When it had gone oast the full-b'-'-k (H.owker) it bounced straight slope the line, with Hawker in hM nursuit. He was too Inte. however, the hn'l going out ■"b'-nt 10 yards from the Old Boys’ goal-line. Thus in one kick Petone had gained about eighty yards of ground.
