CHESS

Auckland v. Wellington When play ceased in the annual telegraphic match between the Auckland aud Wellington clubs eight games were not completed. The two captains— Messrs. W. Mackay (Wellington) and J. A? Moir (Auckland) —subsequently came to an agreement regarding seven of these positions, and it was therefore necessary to send only one diagram to the Dunedin members of the New Zealand Adjudication Board, Messrs. J. B. Dunlop, O. Bulk and L. D. Coombs. Their decision is now to hand, the game in suspense being declared a draw (W. R. E. Jones 4, A. E. Leylnnd 4). The final result is. therefore: Wellington C.C. 104. Auckland C.C. 91, a result that will lend additional interest to the match between the Otago nnd Wellington clubs, which is scheduled to commence at 6.30 p.m. this evening. The full score of the match just completed is as follows:

Total 10) Total 9) The Wellington club thus scores a lint in the contest for the club chain--ionship of the Dominion. It is in;eresting to recall that the above clubs have now opposed each other sixteen times, the honours being with the Wellington C.C.', which has won 11 of these matches, while the Auckland C.C. has won four, and one ended in a tie, viz., in 1922 (10—10). When the first of these fixtures was played in 189'1 the spectators at this end included the late Hon. John Ballance (Premier) and the late Sir Robert Stout (who founded the first Dunedin Chess Club in 1865). It may be added that of the fifteen players who represented the Wellington C.C. in the pioneer match 39 years ago. only two are still fighting the club’s battles, viz., Messrs. W. Mackay (president) nnd F._ K. Kelling (senior vice-president). None of the Aucklanders who played in the first fixture is still “on the warpath.”

Karori v. Hutt Valley

The Karori and Hutt Valley clubs, which were both formed shortly after the Easter holidays, opposed each other at Karori on Thursday last, a very enjoyable evening being spent. At the refreshment interval Mr. H. I. Bennett (vice-president) extended a cordial. wdcome to the visitors, whose president, Mr. G. Wigham. endorsed Mr. Bennetts remarks regarding the value nnd enjoyment of these gatherings. He also returned thanks for the hospitality extended to bis team. Mr. Giesen was complimented during the evening on Hie sue cess of liis labours in founding the Hutt Valiev club (of which he is a most energetic hon. secretary), the average n H pn “" mine at the weekly meetings being 26.
