Auckland clubs, which counts for the club championship of the Dominion, was commenced on Saturday, evening, when very fair progress was made. The local working-bee, Messrs. Toomath and Kelling, had everything in readiness for a punctual start, and there were no misba'ps with the wire. The local officials were as follow: Operator, W. Kennedy; umpire, H. M. Rosenberg; captain, W. Mackay; and scrutineers, Messrs. W. Toomath, H. M. Rosenberg, R. G. Didsbury, A. McKay, M. A. Craven. J. B. Craven and C. Dallas. The pairings and openings used were as follow: —

Wellington club won the toss, and thus had first move at the odd-numbered boards. Only three games were finished during the evening, Messrs. G. Wigham and W. J. Fairburn scoring meritorious wins for the local club, while Mr. Hardy and his opponent agreed to a draw at Board 16. The Wellington club thus has a lead of two points, but on the other hand the Auckland C.C. —which was minus the services of its champion, Mr. J. C. Grierson—is a pawn up at Boards 19 and 20. The remaining 15 games are in a very even state. Play concludes on Saturday evening, when spectators should witness some very interesting finishes. Wadestown v. Karori. The Wadestown and Karori clubs met for the first time at Wadestown on Thursday evening, the former winning by two games. The scores are as follow : —

Mr. H. Godtschalk tendered a cordial welcome to the visitors and Mr. A. W. Gyles returned thanks for the hospitality shown to his team.
