While some Maoris were travelling along the beach near Pungarehu, 14 miles from Opunake, recently, a discovery of ambergris was made. Several pieces were found, totalling in weight about 2Jlb. The Maoris took the specimen to a New Plymouth chemist for analysis. The chemist stated that the material was undoubtedly ambergris. He has from time to time handled several parcels of this valuable product. Early- this year a piece of ambergris weighing about lib. was analysed for a Maori finder and was B gnt to England to be sold.
