OVERLOADED LORRIES
Protecting County Roads CONFERENCE PROPOSED The necessity for restricting heavy traffic in order to protect country roads was urged by Councillor R. W. Bothamley at yesterday’s meeting of the Makara County Council. He suggested that the council should obtain a weighing-machine, and any load which was considered to be excessive could be put on the machine. If this were done, it would save county ratepayers a great deal in rates. Councillor K. G. Mexted said that if they were to get their roads bituminised heavy traffic would, not hurt them so much. ‘ The chairman (Councillor E. Windley) said he was’afraid that if the council was to spend £lOOO on a weigh-ing-machine lorry-owners would simply stop over-loading, and their £lOOO would be lying idle. The Government had fixed the weights which could be carried on public roads, and they looked to the public bodies to see that the law was observed. It might be possible to arrange a conference between representatives of the Makara, Hutt, and Horowhenua Counties, and if they could agree as to uniform speed and weights they would be able to get a subsidy from the Main Highways Board.
