CHARITABLE AID

“Doing Al! Possible”

Palmerston North, June 13.

In an interview to-day with a “Dominion” representative, exception was taken by the chairman of the Palmerston North Hospital Board (Mr. J. K. Hornblow) to a statement made by the Mayor (Mr. A. J. Graham) that the Charitable Aid Board should do more to assist the unemployed of Palmerston North. “Last ye ar we paid upward of £lOOO for the unemployed,” said Mr. Hornblow. “Thia year we are doing more that we consider we are called upon to do. In my opinion the question of the unemployed is for the local bodies, which are get- •» £2 for £1 subsidy, while we get no subsidy at all. As a board we have done all we possibly can, and we have had to cut down on other things to help the unemployed.”
